Legislation sponsored by Sen. Jake Corman (R-34) that changes the certification process for certified public accountants (CPAs) passed cleared the House and Senate this week and is now before the Governor for his signature to become law.

7/3/08 - Orie: Senate Endorses Bill to Expand PA's Newborn Screening Program
The state Senate today approved legislation that would expand Pennsylvania’s Newborn Screening and Follow-up Program to include 29 “core” genetic conditions that are serious but treatable if caught early, according to Sen. Jane Orie (R-Allegheny).

Yesterday, in a unanimous vote, the State Senate passed legislation introduced by Senator Jane Orie (R-Allegheny, Butler) to eliminate conflicts of interest when state government enters into contracts with outside consultants.

7/3/08 - Sen. Wonderling Bill Prohibiting Government Intrusion Into VoIP Passes Senate
On July 2nd, the Pennsylvania Senate approved legislation (SB 1000) introduced by state Senator Rob Wonderling (R-24th) preventing any state government agency from regulating Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP. VoIP allows telephone calls to be made via a broadband internet connection instead of a regular phone line.  Use of VoIP services grew by more than 500 percent in the last two years.

Senator Jane Orie (R-Allegheny) today hailed passage of landmark and national model legislation that would require Pennsylvania insurance companies, for the first time, to cover treatment for a wide spectrum of autism disorders. House Bill 1150 passed the Senate by a vote of 49 to 1. The Governor has indicated his support and intention to sign this legislation into law.  It will be one of the strongest insurance mandates for autism yet achieved in the nation.

The Senate today approved legislation that would ensure more Pennsylvanians are screened for colorectal cancer according to Senator Tommy Tomlinson (R-Bucks), who was the prime sponsor of the original bill.  House Bill 1150 requires insurance companies to provide insurance coverage for autism, and to mandate coverage for colorectal screening for individuals 50 and over.

Governor Edward G. Rendell signed legislation (SB 638) introduced by state Senator Rob Wonderling (R-24th) to establish a cancer drug repository in Pennsylvania to help uninsured patients and those in need gain access to safe, unused cancer medications.  Cancer patients who are uninsured or underinsured could access these medications through a network of participating pharmacies and medical clinics.

5/9/08 - H2O PA Plan Would Fund Critical Infrastructure Needs
Senator Jane Earll (R-49), Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi (R-9) and Sen. Mike Folmer (R-48) today announced H2O PA, a plan to provide $750 million in funding for critical water and sewer projects, storm water projects, flood control projects, and high-hazard dam repairs.

5/8/08 - Senate Approves Baker Bill to Improve Review of Child Deaths
The state Senate approved legislation sponsored by Senator Lisa Baker aimed at increasing child safety in Pennsylvania.  The bill would implement a child death review program to coordinate local teams to examine the circumstances surrounding deaths of individuals under the age of 21.

5/8/08 - Senators Unveil Foreclosure Relief and Affordable Housing Initiative
Legislation that would increase emergency mortgage assistance, provide grants and loans to homeowners facing foreclosure, and create a housing trust fund was announced by two Republican senators today. 

5/7/08 - Committee Approves Browne Bill to Open Spending Records
The Senate Finance Committee approved Senate Bill 1350, the Taxpayer Transparency Act, according to Senator Pat Browne, committee chairman and prime sponsor of the measure.

5/7/08 - Senate/House Panel to Hear Testimony on Restructuring PA's Emergency Response System
The Senate and House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness committees will hold a joint informational hearing on proposed legislation to restructure Pennsylvania's emergency management agency and statewide response system.  The committees are chaired by Senator Lisa Baker (R-20) and Representative Tony Melio (D-141).

5/6/08 - Greenleaf Bill to Strengthen State’s Puppy Lemon Law Clears Committee
The Senate Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee approved Senate Bill 536, State Senator Stewart J. Greenleaf’s (R-Montgomery/Bucks) proposal to strengthen Pennsylvania’s Dog Purchaser Protection Act, commonly known as the Puppy Lemon Law.   

5/6/08 - Rhoades Co-Chairs General Assembly Coal Conference
Realizing the need to shift focus back to Pennsylvania's most abundant natural resource, State Senator James J. Rhoades (R-29) today joined Senate and House members in the formation of a General Assembly Coal Conference, a bipartisan committee emphasizing the continued importance of coal and coal-driven technologies in the Commonwealth.
